National "Do
Not Call" List
The Federal Government is rolling out a national 'do not call' list.
Customers interested in ridding themselves of calls from telemarketers
can register their phone numbers online for free. Customers can also
call 888-382-1222.
Register
You can register for free at www.donotcall.gov
Once you have registered, your phone number registration will be
effective for 5 years. It will be illegal for most telemarketers
to call you, and you will be able to file a complaint if a telemarketer
does call you. Politicians, survey-taking organizations and nonprofit
groups will still be able to call those on the list. Also, companies
that have an existing business relationship with a consumer can continue
to call them for 18 months after the program takes effect.
National Marketers will now have to invest more heavily in direct
mail, traditional media advertising and Internet-based marketing
such as spam e-mail. Pierce Telephone already has an email filter
in place for filtering such messages. To find out more, see their
press release.
